A list looks like a list.

If you want a different appearance, you must create your own component, by extending Canvas.

You can use eSWT on S60 3.2 FP2 and later devices.
Take a look at the ListView on the eSWT Gallery. http://www.eclipse.org/ercp/eswt/gallery/gallery.php.

The screenshots are from S60 3.2 and I think ListView is just what you are describing.
