Dev Cert Request - How many Caps

Dear Devs,

Q1:
From the posts and docs,
it looks like we have to do the Dev Cert Request
at least ONCE, before open or express signing, and content ID purchase
are enabled in the symbiansigned website

true?

if yes, putting more than needed capabilities in the dev cert, step 4, is a bad option?
we are not sure yet about our needed caps. We may not need SwEvent (which is a step higher than the read-write user data and read user envirmnemtn)

Q2: also, the dev certificate that we will get,
do we have to obey the stated caps.

Q3: is the dev certificate bound to a UID?

I suppose you would like to check and test your application before submitting it for signing(since it's not free ,you are going to submit your app blindly ) Thus for that you need to a developer certificate if its is not self signed application.

Will submitting for Certified signing you have to justify why u are using the specified capability.

Example : NetworkControl
For:To initiate Video Call.The application does not use this capability to directly access the SIM card for network purpose.
API Used: CAiwServiceHandler::NewLC()

Check whether SWEvent is not used by your application. You can use carbide capability scanner plugin and also check the sdk documentation for it

check this . you define the capability need by ur application exception when they need a Manufacture permission ..Like AllFiles ...chk the sdk

Ans1: No, Before sending application to certified/express signing it is not required to request DevCertificate. To test application before sending it to symbiansigning developer can use either self certificate or developer certificate. If your application is using capabilities which are free then use self certificate to test it before sending it to symbian signing, if it require more capabilities then use DevCerti. Yes you can purchase content ID from https://www.symbiansigned.com, if u have account in it. No, putting more capabiities in DevCerti is not bad Option, it does matter only to certified/express signing.

Ans2: No.

Ans3: No, DevCerti is not bound to UID, Symbian provided range from 0xE0000000 - 0xEFFFFFFF to use for development. DevCerti is bound to IMEI of device, selfcerti is even not bound to IMEI.

God, why does it have to be so complicated...
anywyay, I get the general Idea:

- Develop the app and test it using Open Signed Online (does not require anything)
- Decide on the final capabilities list

Then continue with Express Signing (we do not need certified - only use SwEvent)

So the big question is that, we need to do that devcet tool and submit the request, and then be able to buy content ID, and then... etc.

So!!! To release the application to the public
which will be signed by my company! what on earth do we need?
a DevCert? a Developer certificate?....

Let's make it very simpler. DevCertRequest tool is used for getting Developer certificate. If you do not need developer certificate then you do not require DevCertRequest tool and hence Developer certificate.

But as you are going to use Express Signed option, you have to have your application signed with Publisher ID. You need to apply for Publisher ID and then need to extract certificate from Publisher ID using TC-ConvertP12 tool. By using that tool, you will be able to extract .cer and .key files.

Then simply use those extracted .cer and .key file to sign you .sis file and submit it to SymbianSigned.com under Express signed option.

To further clarify the issues: you should make distinction between signing and certification and you should make distinction between R&D signing and the official release.

I signed the sis file using the publisher ID.
The verification tool confirmed the signing.

Q1: At which point do I use the protected UID?
My guess is that I have to sign with the protected UID, before submitting for
express signed.

Yes, you better do so.

I don't think so rather I am not aware if there is such a constraint. And I don't have any problem on purchasing ContentID, it takes me to the paypal website. Anyways this seems to be symbian specific problem and you might like to ask on their forum, here: http://developer.symbian.com/forum/f...umID=2&start=0

yeah, I enabled content IDs and express signed manually
(sent private message to developer.symbian.com (user: symbiansigned)

also, I signed my application with my developer certificate
bound on my IMEI, using my unprotected UID, and it runs.

Gess I have to sign with the real UID, using the publisher certificate,
before submitting for express signed

yeah, symbian signed is a couple of days learning curve...

Yes, now you need to change your old UID with the new protected range UID and then build your application again. Finally sign it with Publisher ID and send it for Express signing.

Tip: In future if you are building application which needs to be symbian signed, you should acquire and use Protected range of UID from symbian signed beforehand. It will save you from lots of trouble later on.

You can use developer certificate with Protected range of UID without any problem.
