We tried AAC format for audio recording & playing, but observed that CMdaAudioInputStream (for audio recording) and CMdaAudioOutputStream (for audio playback) class of symbian doesn’t support AAC format on Nokia 5800 device. SetDataTypeL method of both these class returns value “Format not supported” (KErrNotSupported).

Have you tried CMdaAudioPlayerUtility or CMdaAudioRecorderUtility?

The problem with using the audio stream APIs is that they can only use hardware accelerated codecs (usually implemented on a separate DSP). Some devices have codecs implemented in software, particularly on single chip devices. These are available through the MMF, which is the "old" way of doing things, but still valid. You can only play and record these formats through the relevant utilities.
