remote debugging a console applications

I cannot configure carbide to remote debug a console application.
I use carbide's wizard to create a symbian console application. I then go to the debug perspective and create a new debug configuration.
when I go to the executables tab of the debug configuration, the executables list is empty. even if I change the droplist to "executables selected below" and choose my executable, carbide ignores me.

if I try to debug I get the error "program file not specified"

any ideas ?

now I can debug, but it looks like the symbols are wrong - it is stepping through lines without logic, as if it is not really in the lines I see in the debugger.
what is to be done in such cases ?

Then you are debugging an older version of your code. Make sure that the current one really builds, and it gets installed to the device.
