My E71 usually has/had good GPS reception.
The small built-in GPS app shows a GPS-FIX quickly.
The old Maps 2 software worked quickly, too.

Yesterday I installed the final version of Nokia Maps 3 on the E71.

But I have not been able to get ANY gps fix. I was outside for one hour. I drove around by car for a long while. Nothing.

However, the internal GPS app still gets a fix quickly...

Is this a bug? I'm frustrated not to be able to use maps any more.

    Thanks,
    Kai

    Additional test:

I've now tried to run both Maps 3 and internal GPS app at the same time, and I use task switching.

Internal GPS app has fix. Maps 3 has downloaded 8 KB, but no fix. Maps displays some wrong position.

    Hi Kai

Nokia's device support is at http://www.nokia.com/support and there is also dedicated support for Nokia/Ovi Maps at http://europe.nokia.com/explore-services/maps/support

If you want to discuss with other Nokia users you can visit http://www.nokia.com/discussions

This site should be of interest to you only if you're planning to write a maps application yourself.

ltomuta, thanks for your reply and your pointers to official nokia support. I will use it for future questions.

However, I'd like to describe what I've learned, maybe it will be helpful for future readers of this message, and maybe you want to forward my report as a bug description to the maps developers.

The GPS-Data application built into the Nokia E71 has a menu "positioning settings". It offers 4 methods to obtain positioning information. I had three of them enabled:
    - supported gps
    - internal gps
    - network based (translated from german)

Both the internal GPS-data application, and the old Maps 2 application work fine with all these methods enabled.
But Maps 3 fails, as described earlier.

Today I made another experiment, I disabled "supported gps" (whatever this means), and I disabled "network based".
To my big surprise, after this configuration change, the Maps 3 application was able to obtain a GPS fix.

From my point of view this is a bug in Maps 3, and maybe you want to forward this bug description (never obtains gps fix with multiple methods enabled) to the developers.

    Thanks and Regards

You might be right in your observations but for me to report anything as a bug I would have to reproduce the problem myself. Also, given my developer perspective I would not care about the end-product but about the APIs which enable it.

I will try to see how the appication behaves on my phones and if I notice something funny I will create an error report. From your perspective it is better to use the contact options that might be presented at http://europe.nokia.com/explore-services/maps/support (or http://www.nokia.com discussions) and to let Nokia Maps know about this probem from your end-user perspective. Others will join you if the problem is indeed common.

Tip: When reporting the problem switch the phone language to English and then describe settigns and error messages using those untranslated strings, it helps avoiding confusion. I guess the GPS setting you see is "Internal GPS"

Can you check the settings you have? I guess either your access point is NONE or the server isn't supl.nokia.com.
    Best regards

The "positioning settings" thing is definitely not being used correctly by ovi maps 3.04.
I had "internet/wifi" checked, and when I was off the network, it would give up trying to find my position and say "connection failed", instead of using the integrated GPS. That is definitely a bug in Ovi Maps.

What is the difference between "assisted GPS" and "integrated gps"?
I had "assisted" unchecked before, and just checked it on my N97 Mini.

you could maybe google for "A-GPS" to get full description. Basically the GPS itself is rather slow, so the assisted GPS also uses other values for determining the position to make it lot faster to find teh actual position..
