Is there a list of top devices to support? Or a way to tell the install base for each?

Probably you can have a look at the devices by s60 version that are in market. That would give you an idea as to what s60 edition you need to support rather than devices.

So is the idea more to support the series/edition, rather then handsets for OVI?

Hi,

As far as I see, Ovi is just a server which provides you some services, making devices more usuable. So it really doesn't depend on which series/edition the device is from as long as it can connect to ovi store.

When we talk of some application to run on certain device, we need to look into the series/edition of the device as there could be lot of changes in the sdk between editions.

But I would suggest refering some faqs on ovi, if there are any device/series specific limitations; as I have personally not used ovi store yet.

Looking into this the models sold also tend to be different for each region and so the countries/regions ie Europe,Asia,Middle East, China, USA and then you have to target the language, so the installled base differs.

Picking the latest S60 3rd, e.g. will have limited market until there are greater sales, mainly targeting Europe but with a future market density. In this case you might consider a popular phone like then N95 which ia available in all regions as you base phone and has large base of ownership.

There again J2me will have a much larger market across many regions and phones.

You may also wanna take a look at the JavaVerified list of device groups. From this you can at least see what devices they consider 'compatible'. You can then test your app. on the lead device of the groups you find relevant, and then cross your fingers that it will also pass Ovi QA on all the other devices of the group

You might also want to look at GetJar's device statistics reports to see which handsets have the most downloads. (IIRC the N95 and N73 are the two most popular among Symbian V3 handsets)
