WLAN Ad-hoc ethernet

Hello,

I have been reading two books about Symbian OS ( Developing Software for Symbian and Communications Programming ) and now I am trying to find out a way to access directly to the physical layer. I want to develop an ad-hoc protocol on top of 802.11. Another option is to develop the protocol in the user space accesing to the physical layer, without using TCP or UDP. Is there any way to use raw-sockets? I have read that in symbian are 4 sockets type too, but the book doesn't mention anything about them.

How can I change the mode (from infraestructure to ad-hoc)? How can I access to the physical layer directly? Is there any way to do this?
