I use SendAs API to send SMS in S60 V3 and it works on my cell phone(N78).
After the sms message is sent successfully, it automatically generates the a status item in the sms delivery report list.

My question is, how to effectively catch the SMS sending status and remove the sms delivery report as well?

When using the high level SMS APIs the outcome will be as per phone's global settings. If the user does not want delivery receipts he/she will have to disable them from Messaging app's settings.

Otherwise, rather than deleting delivery receipts you should rather make sure they are not sent for your messages. That requires lower level implementation however. Search the wiki for "delivery receipt"
