How to get/choose the TP-Message Reference ?

I am able to send messages indicating a status Request Status Report and I receive correctly de SMS-Status when the message is delivered to the destination. My problem is that the modem follows an internal sequencially Message Identifier that I cannot know which message belongs to. Is there any way to specify the Message Identifier (I do that in the PDU but it still uses its internal counter) or otherwise, can I get the internal modem counter using some AT command ??

Upon successful messaging sending, the Message Reference is returned (shown). (See e.g. question 7 in the SmartMessaging FAQ.)
