Embedded fonts issue on S40 devices in wallpaper mode

Hi,

I got a problem with a FL 1.1 SWF file that has dynamic text fields and embedded fonts. It works perfectly as a wallpaper on a Nokia 6500 slide but there are problems with the Nokia 6600i. The dynamic text fields are not rendered on the 6600i when the SWF file is used as wallpaper. However, in the stand alone player it looks fine.

Both devices have the same OS version (S40 5th FP1). The only difference is the Flash Lite version (6500=2.1; 6600=3.0). I have tried to compile the SWF as FL 2.x and FL3.0 too, but it has no effect for the wallpaper mode on the 6600.

Has anybody a clue what's wrong???

Not sure, but in addition to making the embed fonts by choosing the glyphs sets, you can also add all those characters manually in the 'Include these characters' box.

I had a similar problem before and it worked this way, and i don't guess why :-)

Ciao,

check Device Central, it show the differences in the text fonts between devices.
The 6600i uses UTF16 while the 6500 slide ISOLATIN1 so that might be the issue.
Try do use a different font that is common to both devices.

thanks for your input. The strange thing is that the SWF file looks fine on booth devices in the standalone player. That's why I think that it's not a general problem with embedded fonts or especially the font I use. Only when the SWF is set as wallpaper on the 6600 the text fields with the embedded fonts disappear.

Maybe it's a new security restriction for the wallpaper mode that comes with FL 3 players on S40 5th Ed FP1 devices?! :S

not sure but for S40 wallpaper all calls for data are removed.
In any case text should work, you best bet is to use a different font or use the default device font

Mh, okay. Sorry, I forgot to mention that I have tried a different font -> same problem.

I will try to contact Nokia to get further information about this issue. Thanks for your help so far.

Not sure but, are you using bold/italic font, just check with the normal text with embed font.

No, it's text with regular style. I have reported this issue to Nokia, maybe I will get some feedback.

Edit: It seems like it depends on the font type. True Type fonts seems to work, Open Type fonts not in my case.

A little update:

I have not received any feedback from Nokia so far. But yesterday I had the opportunity to test my SWF on a Nokia X3 and everything was working perfectly. According to the UAProfiles both handsets support the same character sets: ISO-8859-1, ISO-10646-UCS-2, US-ASCII + UTF-8 and both handsets are using the same Flash Lite player version (3.0). So the environment is nearly the same for both devices, apart from the edition of the S40 OS . And this leads me to the conclusion that the embedded font rendering issue in wallpaper mode seems to be a platform specific problem of the S40 5th Edition FP1. Unfortunately I could not figure out a workaround apart from using the system fonts. I appreciate every hint or information regarding this topic.
