    Hi,
I have signed a midlet with a thawte certificate using netbeans 6.8. When I deploy the application on my x6, it still tells me it is untrusted. On the nokia 2730, it displays the message "Certificate not on phone or sim". It does not install at all.

Is thawte not on these phone? What could I be doing wrong? The application is meant to run on the nokia 2730.

When I copy the midlet to the x6 phone and open the jad file, it recognised the supplier but the type is unknown. I follow the prompts, it starts installing and then displays "Unable to install".

    Regards,
    Richard

Sounds like that your 2730 does not have Thawte certificate for MIDlet signing (I do not know the reason for that, it could have something to do with regional requirements, or something else). It is not possible to install that certificate on the phone so you need to use the unsigned version or find out if the phone has Verisign certificate and use that (in case it exists on the phone). Unfortunately I cannot remember the exact menu path on 2730 to show the available certificates.

The case of x6 is different. Are you able to install the unsigned MIDlet on the phone?

In the case of x6, I found out why. When I double click on the jad from my desktop, the OVI pc suite initiates the installation and I continue on the phone. It appears the jad is not sent along. When the pc suite installs it, it tells me it is not trusted. I copied the jad and jar to the memory card and when I open the jad, it installed fine. It froze halfway the first time though but afterwards, it worked. Tried 2 signed apps and they worked fine.
Thanks for the response. For the 2730, I wouldn't have mind an unsigned version. The issue is that the application does some http calls in the background by after reading some files. The phone always asks for confirmation on these activities (2 for the file access and 1 for the network access). This interrupts the user who may be doing something else. I thought signing it will stop those messages from showing up. If there is a way to turn off those messages, I will be very happy.

    PS:
The initial application was not properly signed by netbeans. I had to download the latest version of WTK and it signed the application correctly. Afterwards, the x6 accepted it without issues. Still playing around with the 2730 for more answers.

Is your Nokis 2730 a carrier locked device?
For supresing these messages, you can educate your end user on the first launch to go to the applcation manager and setup the permissions as ask only once or allow always for network calls and reading user data or file system.
    Thanks,

If your 2730 is not a locked device (for some carrier) here are the likely API access settings for you phone
    http://wiki.forum.nokia.com/index.ph...ies_40_5th_FP1

In your case you would need the signing as there are no other options than "ask always" for file access for unsigned MIDlets.

    best regards

    Hi,
I doubt the 2730 is locked. I'm yet to test a newly signed midlet against it. Thanks for the info. I hope the problem has to do with netbeans failing to sign the midlet properly.

Even after signing the Midlet using WTK Midlet signing utility, you may still need to set the permission for your installed application by using application manager and set to "ask only once" or "allow always" for network calls and file system access.

    Hi,

I use a Thawte cert for signing and I also use NetBeans. My Thawte certificate seems to work on most every Nokia phone in the Ovi store (except for one or two that don't have a Thawte root certificate). I have documented every step in the process I use in this document:

Perhaps you will find it helpful.

(Keep in mind that in the document the app I am signing is called Bongo, and the name of my company is UnME2.)
    Cheers,
