encrypting string

Hi all,

Im using MD5 for encrypt the string. but it generate 32 digit of character. i feel its too long. i need 8 or 10 digit of character. How its possible to convert any length of original text to 8 or 10 digit of encrypted text?

And i need decrypt also. how to achieve this?

Compressing (with or without encryption) any length strings to 8 or 10 digits/characters is a physical impossibility.

However, MD5 is not encryption algorithm but a checksum/digest/hash algorithm that "fingerprints" a string (you cannot get the original string from the hash, but you can recompute the hash for a string to see if it is the same/original string or not).

Another hash algorithm is SHA-1, but it produced an even longer hash than MD5.

For other algorithms, search the internet for, e.g., "cryptographic hash function" and perhaps you'll find something that generates shorter hashes

I tried it.
I used compressor for this purpose but Some special symbols append in the result.
Any one having idea?
I have 16 digits of string. I need to encrypt that original string upto 6 or 8 digit of string.
How its possible?
