    This method does not appear to be supported in J2ME, yet FALSE appears to be the default setting in the netbeans emulator. Does anybody know if this is the default setting generally or will it vary from phone to phone?

    Since the concept of "lenient" does not exist, you should assume that implementations will not be lenient.
