The same problem occured when I tried to put some HD mkv files to my Lumia 520. After searching the its specs, I got know MKV is not the supported format for the Windows 8 tablet as well as AVI. The easiest solution I've found would to be convert the MKV to Nokia Lumia 520 friendly video, mp4 is a wise choice. A relevent disccusion talk about the solution for playing MKV on Nokia Lumia 520.
