Smart Messaging on 3310 and 6130

Using a GSM modem, I can't seem to get smart messaging working on a 3310, yet it works properly on a 6130. I've tried business cards(VCARD), ring tones, calendar entries, etc. The 3310 simply pops a text message saying "Message cannot be displayed here". What am I missing?
