    Hi,

is it possible to develop apps using Nokia's Symbian OS for s40 phones or can an independent developer only use the general Symbian OS apis for s60 and s80?

currently there is no S40 Symbian phones, so no symbian development possible with them.

    Thanks yucca,

I find it strange that this information isnt explicitly mentioned in nokia documentation ( although it is implied)

stranger still is the decsion for nokia to protect s40 development. Surely if this was open to developers, the most popular phone series can benefit from these extra apps.

in fact nothing strange there. Series 40 phones are based on NOS and are more like traditional mobile phones. They are propably cheaper to make since you don't need to build all the stuff that symbian requires as well you don't need to pay for the OS lisence, since the OS is owned by manufacturer. That's basically what all manufacturers are doing.

You can still make applications for it with Java MIDP, more restricted thou, but serves a great number of customers.
