Hey,
Is there a tool available that can convert midis to sp-midi format? Is the filesize smaller in sp-midi comparing similar midi? What are the actual advantages? How many channels it support?
Thanks,
Petteri.

There's no such tool at the moment from Nokia, but there will be one in some point. You can read more about SP-MIDI from http://www.midi.org/about-midi/abtspmidi.htm.

The advantage of SP_MIDI is that a single file can play on a range of handsets with multiple polyphony levels. So for example, a MIDI file that sounds great on a 7650 (which has 24-voice polyphony) will not sound good on a 3510 (which has 4-voice polyphony) because many of the notes will be cut off or not played at all.
SP-MIDI allows the composer to specify which notes get ignored in a less powerful handset. So you could just decide to use the Piano track in the 3510, but the whole arrangement in the 7650.
To do this, you need to create a SYSEX message called a MIP message, and insert it into the start of your file. There's more information about this at www.mma.org. Nokia also publishes documents about MIDI in its phones.

This hasn't been answered by the preceding posters.
Question: Is the filesize smaller in sp-midi comparing similar midi?
Answer: No, it will be a tiny little bit bigger. Depending on the number of channels used, it varies from 10 to 40 (1-16channels) bytes increase.
However, my SP-MIDI-encoder does tweak some bytes out of most source MIDIs since they often contain unnecessary text events and other stuff no mobile device can handle yet.
I will post the URL within the next week - will be free software in the first place.

I just released MMSgurus' MIDIscale - a tool for applying SP-MIDI MIP-messages to midi file (format 0 and 1)....
MMSgurus' MIDIscale is a simple application making that process a one-hander.
All you need to do is;
- open the MIDI file you want to convert (to be exact, you don?t want to convert, you want to add SP-MIDI attributes)
- order the channels to give em the priorities, select the maximum instantaneous polyphony for that channel
- repeat that for all channels
- send the file to your mobile via infrared or save it back to your harddisk
You don?t need to calculate or insert special values into your sequence, MMSgurus' MIDIscale does it for you.
This tool squeezes as much data out of the original midi as possible.
The results usually are 10 percent smaller than the original content.
MMSgurus' MIDIscale is free for non-commercial use.
Just go ahead, try it out and tell me if you liked it.
Any improvements or bug-reports are certainly welcome.
