J2ME games on MMC

Hi I’m new to the J2ME development and would appreciate a little helpful advice.

I’m looking at distributing J2ME games to Nokia series 60 mobile phones on Multi-Media cards and basically I don’t know where to start.

Could anybody point me in the right direction?

Well, usually a j2me game is about 300-500kb so I think that's not really a good idea to sell it on mmc cards, it would be very expensive. The normal way is to sell them via web, sms and things like that, and that way you can buy a game anytime and anyplace.

Other question is that there are a lot of s60 phones which needs to take off the battery to change the card so you need to restart the phone to change the game (that was one of the reason for the n-gage qd to come out).

Which kind of game do you want to develop?

What I’m thinking of is distributing a suite of games collected onto an MMC card – making effective use of the space available.

Ideally I would like to run the applications from the card but I think I may have to move it onto the phone.

My problem is that I’m not sure how to format the card and then how to install the applications stored on the card onto the phone.

My initial thought was to implement a J2ME midlet that could manage the content of the card. This would present the user with a list of the applications that are on the card, when the user select an application it then runs it (it might have to copy it onto the phone first).

Does this seem feasible?

I looked into doing something similar. The problem i found was purchasing the MMC cards. We looked at 8Mb cards (from memory). There is a few companies out there that specialise in supply and imaging of MMC and SDcards but the minimum amount was about 15 000 or 20 000 cards i think. It was unfortunatly too much of an outlay (for us anyway) when we didn't know if we would get the sales.

To run midlets you don't need to put them on the phone, they can run from the card.

About the menu, you can do a midlet of midlets :P, that way when you run the main midlet a menu will appear. But be carefull about the size of the midlet because I think that some devices have limits (for example on blackberrys there is a limit of 128kb).

The other way is to put the midlets preinstalled on the card, that way when you power on the phone the applications will be directly in the main menu of the phone or in the applications menu (depending on the phone).

Well, maybe there are other ways to do what you want to do, but I don't know much on the subject.

Hi Nuria, I have a similar problem, what I want to do is to make an aplication that shoul be installed in de commun memory space but I want it to read text files from MMC, my application now reads files saved in the same JAR but that is not what I want.
Now I'm using getResourceAsStream . is there another instruction that allows me to read MMC?
