syncml errors with nokia 8800

We're seeing a strange problem when syncing with Nokia 8800 phones. It sometimes reports "Data transfer not supported on other device" or "Unable to process" errors on the device and does not complete the sync process. Looking at the syncml server trace, the server sends the correct document back to the client. In fact, every other Nokia phone works fine with our server except this model. So I'm wondering if anyone has any knowledge about specific issues with this phone's syncml support.
