Pushing JAR/JAD files without PC Suite

Hi,

I'm trying to install a set of MIDlets on my shiny new 6230i, however since I cannot use Windows for various reasons (PowerPC CPU being one of them) I am having a hard time getting the phone to install them.

I've had some success selecting .jad files in the browser, however that does not work reliably[1] and counts against my monthly GPRS traffic. I have installed jmIRC and midpSSH using that method, so I'm probably not totally off here.

I am now wondering whether I could utilize Bluetooth to my advantage here. I can transfer files both by "regular" OBEX and OBEX push, however these files just show up with a "question mark" icon, and I cannot do much with them.

Is there some way that I could make the phone attempt to install the application?

[1] there is a number of GPLed apps that I've linked to from here that fail to work for me, in case anyone wants to try. For all but one (where the .jad appears to be plain broken), the download succeeds, according to the web server, then the phone complains about a missing connection (?).

Its because the .JAR files are missing

The file pointed to http://www.geoffwilliams.me.uk/MEInvaders.jar by the .JAD files is no longer there.

.JAD files are just like descriptor files that tell you about the app you are downloading (eg: version requirements). After downloading, it connects to the actual URL where the .JAR files are located (brilliant, it charges you for another GPRS usage!).

You can actually install apps without the .JAD file (except some old phone models that requires it orrequires to be installed via OTA or IrDA only -- not bluetooth)

For bluetoorh.. I use FC3 which has BlueZ already part of of its core, the i just use the obex_push command to send to the BT enabled phone.

I'm not sure the JAD really points there, the URL for the JAR is relative to the JAD, not to the info page IIRC. Also, it would not explain the others failing (especially after download)

Hrm, that sounds more like the problem at hand -- however the 6230i is not exactly "old".

I used the bluez stack and ussp-push, which pushes over an established rfcomm link (which is advertised by the obex push profile); the files show up in my "received files" folder, but I cannot install them as the phone does not recognize the data type (neither for JAR, nor for JAD files).

I'm now wondering how the PC Suite implements pushing applications onto the phone via Bluetooth, as a few forum posts indicate to me that this is working with the 6230i.

Answering myself, I have part of a success now, not in uploading via BT, but in providing files via HTTP (good thing I have 30MB of traffic to burn each month). It appears that the mime type for the JAR file needs to be "application/java-archive", and a lot of web servers still serve the files as
"application/x-java-archive" in the default configuration.
