Nokia phones are not ready for Bluetooth audio

Nokia phones do not support the Bluetooth standard for stereo audio.

Although Nokia phones indicate that they are MP3 players and have Bluetooth technology they are missing Advanced Audio Distribution Profiles (A2DP) and Audio Video Remote Control Profiles (AVRCP).

Correct, but not really any news. Not many (any?) phones on the market by any vendor support either one of those profiles yet.

Well, actually Nokia 8800 and Nokia N91 support both A2DP and AVRCP bluetooth profile and so is the HS-12W stereo bluetooth headset.

Since it is a rather new feature in the phones I guess it is not so weird it hasn´t been implemented in so many devices yet..

You're correct; I forgot about the 8800/8801 (I don't have/use any S40 phones). The N91 is not yet on the market.

I know that N91 is not on the market but according to the tech specs I have seen it should have those bluetooth profiles as well when it comes.

Yes, a company called i-tech ships a small app with its stereo bluetooth headsets "MSI BluePlayer", which adds A2DP functionality to any S60 phone and therefore allows to stream MP3's in stereo. Unfortunately this appears to be a brand specific solution. At least it did not work with my Anycom stereo headset...
It seems like a bit of a pity that Nokia itself is not offering a similar software add-on. Maybe this will change once the first Nokia Stereo BT-headset hits the market... For the time being, however, I feel that Nokia owners will have to face the fact that their devices lag technically behind in terms of A2DP funcionality...

Unfortunatly the N91 does NOT support A2DP! It was announced in early beginnings but they dropped it This is confirmed to me from an Nokia official...

If you connect an A2DP headset right now, all you get is twice a poor mono signal, provided by the HF or HS profile. Straignest thing is that AVRCP is still working!

Same story for N80....

About the MSI BluePlayer:
It is a plugin, not an update! If you want to stream music, you must use the BluePlayer instead of the Nokia MusicPlayer.
The MSI BluePlayer does only work with i.Tech devices (like the populair Clip models or the BlueBand), not with other brands! In that case you will get error messages like NO MP3 SUPPORTED.

I've got an N70 and the HS-12W. While messing about with MSI BluePlayer 1.3, I managed to get it working... briefly.
What I did was delete the pairing of the HS-12W to my N70... then run BluePlayer and detect it as a new device. Then BluePlayer prompted me for the passcode to the headset (0000), which I put in. Then when I added a file to the play list and played it, it actually started playing! The headset LCD display changed to 'Audio' and the pause controls worked. The only odd thing was that the audio was very 'skippy'... but it was definately not the 8bit mono that we're used to... it was indeed proper stereo, and a high sample rate!!
I thought perhaps the skipping was due to too high a sample rate, so I dropped a 96kbit file on instead of the 128kbit file I'd tested it with.
Now the bad news (as if skipping wasn't bad enough)... I then couldn't get the headset to connect properly. Now, no matter what I try to do, I get the familiar "Reject by Remote Device" from BluePlayer.
I will try some more tonight, but at least there is some hope... if I managed to get a partial connect like this, then there must be a way to make this work.
Does anyone know of the MSI BluePlayer source code is available?

i fixed this problem. of course it take some time, but now it works fine. i tested this with my Nokia N70 and Nokia BH-501 bluetooth stereo headset.

first, install original MSI blueplayer, then replace file mpob.app with file from this archive. now you don't have a time limit to listen you music.
i think, Nokia can make something more for his customers.

no. i have no headset store on my backyard
but i posted it on some other forums. may be someone tell me if they try it on other headsets. then i let you know about it.
as i think it must be work on any stereo headset with a2dp profile support.
