reading from data cable

hi all,

does anybody know how to read from the data cable of a nokia phone? if anybody has code for the same then please do help coz i've only 1 week to complete the project i'm workin on and reading from the data cable is an important part. help me plz guys....

There are several, different kinds of cables for different phones (pure serial cables, USB cables).

Different phone software platforms (S40, S60, S80), native Symbian vs. Java.

In addition, the direct cable interfaces (driver level) have not been published.

In other words, you're not likely to get both documentation for undocumented interfaces for different cables/devices and also complete your project in a week.

Perhaps there's another way to do what you need (using OBEX or sockets APIs, or something)? Hard to say without details of what you're trying to accomplish.

Thnx for the response guyz...
i've a 10bit raw data from a hardware circuitry which i want to read on to the mobile phone and process it...
one of the methods is to use a printer device driver and a parallel port to usb connector... the data can be read using the parallel port and converted to serial form via the converter... so the physical connection is done... i want to read this data on the mobile phone using the normal data cable supplied along with the phone... i'm using series 60 phones(6680 and 6630)...

i need a code or technique to access this data... if you've any other methods of achieving the same or preferably codes do help...

The doc below i provided before describes what you're looking for, but it is just for 3rd Edition phone, so you will not be able to achieve that using Nokia 6680/6630.

See:

"Java serial port connections over cable are supported in Nokia Series 40 3rd Edition and S60 3rd Edition devices, for example, in the Series 40 device Nokia 6280 and the S60 device Nokia E60. Future Series 40 3rd Edition devices will support this feature as well."

the link you provided helps only in openning a connection on the com port of a computer to read from the mobile device... wat i require is the technique to open the com port of the mobile device... firstly an application has to be made so that we can open the com port connection and read from it...

if you come across any other codes or links let me know buddy...

Are you sure of what you're talking about? I mean, i agree with you that maybe i did not understand what you're looking for but note:

String ports = System.getProperty("microedition.commports");

and

comm = (CommConnection)Connector.open("comm:com0");

This is all device related.

Also, from the Javadocs of javax.microedition.io.CommConnection:

"The valid identifiers for a particular device and OS can be queried through the method System.getProperty() using the key "microedition.commports". A comma separated list of ports is returned which can be combined with a comm: prefix as the URL string to be used to open a serial port connection. (See port naming convention below.)"

What do you want to do? Is it device to device comm connection?

Hi, I am running the sample application using WTK. However, the code
System.getProperty("microedition.commports");
always returns null - it cannot find any ports. Any idea what is wrong?

what ur looking for is code to your project which i think should be done only by u .

anyway i have checked ur porblem on nokia 6680 and it works fine here. r u trying on emulator or phone. i would suggest try running it on phone i dont think u would have any trouble.

ic, thx for your help! btw i will be connecting my phone to a PIC via the serial port. I guess it works differently since there's no PC to assign a virtual port. Anyone worked with ths before?

I've never connected a mobile phone to a PIC microcontroller...do you have the proper cabling for that? I am interested in knowing more about that as well...

I'm working on the possibility of that as well. Will be trying to use the serial cable that comes with the phone, but wonder how i can attach the driver to the MCU to establish a virtual port between them. anyone has done this b4?
