About RMS Data

Hi All

I am developing application in which I cant use file connection as device does not have JSR-75.
So I wanted to know

1. Can we store files in RMS such as xml files
2. What is the maximum size for RMS Data Store.

As per Forum_Nokia_Technical_Library_v1_25

RecordStore maximum size has been increased in Series 40 3rd Edition devices and some Series 40 2nd Edition devices

Overview
Previously there has been a limit of 32K for a single RecordStore in Series 40 devices. Now it has been increased.

S60 2nd Edition and S60 3rd Edition, Nokia 6230i, Nokia 8800

Detailed description
The maximum size of a RecordStore has been increased in the latest Series 40 devices. The maximum size varies between devices, but it can be asked by using the RecordStore.getSizeAvailable() method. The maximum size is, for example, in the Nokia 6230i approximately 130kB and in the Nokia 6270 260kB. The minimum record store size is 32K.

Yes, we can store XML files as well. Since the XML file consists of Strings, storing XML file in RMS wont be a problem.

If we will store it string by string and again read it string by string and then parse it it would be very slow?isnt it.
If yes than what are the possible Workarounds.

Hi Manan,

Maybe you can it as whole using byte streams. Why does your strategy use String by String, what do you mean? Using bytes you can get a java.lang.String back easily...

The question is: Do you really need to store xml files? Normally, these XML files represent something. In your javacode, they may represent a list of objects with some properties. If you find a way to store and read the data representing the list of objects with their properties "directly", using DatainputStream and DataoutputStream, for many cases you have the following advantages:
* the code is simplier
* you need less space in the RMS
* input/output is faster
