MIDP3.0 background MIDlets

Does anyone know what MIDP3.0 "background MIDlets" will be capable of?

Hi Luís,

JSR-271 (MIDP 3.0) is in its early stages. It doesn't even have a draft version, check:

I think nobody except Expert Group members will be able to answer you question. Besides, it is hard to have any foresight regarding when devices will be implementing MIDP 3.0 (and shipping).

Let's see if someone participating here has insights regarding that.

The spec of MIDP 3 sounds great. Let us hope it to come soon....

MIDP 3.0 specification will take some time as juarez jr suggested. I am not directly involved in the spec work, but the early draft review will be published likely sometime in summer. And from there it is still long way until spec is finalized. After that it will take some more time until compatible devices are out from the oven. My advice: don't hold your breath waiting for the MIDP3 devices to come out.

The early draft review closes now on 5 February 2007.

Count on at least a year from final version availability of the JSR to an actual device with it appearing. Could be more, too, but unlikely to be much less (unless there's someting there that makes manufacturers really, really want to get it out).

So, if the final version comes out late 2007, the first devices might appear mid/late 2008 or 2009. Time will tell.

Yes, I've skimmed through it but it has 733 pages (MIDP3.0-EDR.pdf), very hard to review it entirely if you don't have free time for that

So I will stick to its Javadocs and get the details of what will be new/changed from the EDR spec, comparing to MIDP 2.0...
