Background process & catch keys

First of all hi all.
I have a question - It is possible to write application i pys60 that will work in background and will catch keyboard events ?

Example:
I'm writing sms and when i press 1 then app in background catch that and simulate key press 2,3 and 6 so on my screen i will have ".Adm"

I know how to run app in background,simulate key press but i don't know how to catch key press in other apps.
