Find CellID with J2ME

Hi,

I am working on a school project where I need to find the CellID by using J2ME for any device supporting MIDP2.0/CLDC1.1.

Does anybody knows how to do that? Is there another way to determin the current position only by using the network information i.e. without using a GPS device connected to your mobile?

I tried to run the Turist application on my mobile N90, but it dind't work.

AFAIK N90 does not support LAPI

CELL ID is not ID of the cellular thus nothing to do with IMEI. It's the ID of the cell you are using in the network.

Would it be possible to get the CellID from phones which does not impl. JSR179 (Location API).. Some thing like motorola, where it is provided with a System Property..

Thank you for the pointer.. Based on this we tried the code on N73, however the result we get is null.

I suppose N73 should is 3rd edittions fp1..

Did u try in any model of the nokia and got the result.. if yes, pl. let us have the model number.

Nope, I've only tried on S60 3rd edition FP1 device (N95) and got null. The platform editions that this works for are mentioned in the article. Note that it might be possible to get the cell id on some S60 3rd edition FP1 or 3rd edition initial release models too, if they are Eseries.

O.k, may be N73 which I have must be FP1 only.. is there a way to find out which version is this..from software number..

My N73 platform says it is nokian73-1/4.0812.4.2.1

Also Galiceanu,we are able to get cell id on sony erricsson w910i.. However the value we get is 17c2 etc.. Is there a way to resolve this cell id to real location area name as we see on the mobile.. (are they any public and reliable databases from which we could get this.)

Based on the http://www.opencellid.org/ and other google search, it is apperant that just knowing the cellid may not help to get the exact location, one may need

Moible Network Code (mnc), Mobile Country Code (mcc) and Location Area Code. Does the Nokia S60 3rd FP2 phones support reading of these values too. If yes, what the properties realated to these..

Why reading of simple area, which is displayed on the phone made so complex.. It would been very nice to to provide one property, which just displays what is seen on the phone.. This approach is good for simple applications..

Getting MNC is supported on S60 3rd edition FP2 and later: System.getProperty("com.nokia.mid.networkid")

Network identification parameters, such as network ID (NID in CDMA and MNC in GSM) and network short name. The returned string identifier contains both in the following format: <network ID> (<network short name>).

On Series 40 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 1 and later:
System.getProperty("com.nokia.mid.mnc")

Returns MCC/MNC as a 4 to 6 digit string (depending on Operator).

System.getProperty("com.nokia.mid.networkID")

Returns string of current/active network (MCC/MNC). Returns "" if not available (e.g. out of service) and null if the API is not supported.
