    Hello,
I am trying to write programs for my Nokia E70. I downloaded Carbide C++, SDKs... and I am still there. I am getting lost in Nokia's website. Coming from Qt's programming where the docs are wonderful, things are rough here. Is there a good book out there covering the basics; I'd like something specifically written for OS 9.x and S60_3rd.
    Thanks

Unfortunately, there are no Symbian Press titles for programming on Symbian OS v9.1 (S60 3rd Edition) right now. The only books that discuss the new platform are the excellent Symbian OS Internals (http://www.symbian.com/developer/boo...rnal_info.html) and the Platform Security book (http://www.symbian.com/developer/boo...sops_info.html) but these are classified as "Technology" series books and don't cover application development in detail.

That said, although for the older platforms, the Babin, Stichbury (ahem) and Harrison books (http://www.symbian.com/developer/boo...p_v2_info.html) have a lot of useful information - as does the Developing Series 60 Applications book (http://www.forum.nokia.com/main/plat...60/books.html). You can use these to get comfortable with concepts and, from there, it's possible to find out what's changed in the newer platform from Forum Nokia and Symbian DevNet.

Oh, and there's quite a nice application development tutorial in the Symbian Library section of the 3rd Edition MR SDK. It's a walkthrough of how to create a filesystem browser application on both S60 3rd Ed and UIQ3. Haven't managed to find the accompanying example code yet though it should be there somewhere...

As the author of one of those "free" e-books, which are actually cracked DRM copies of books offered for sale, I'd ask you to consider making a purchase of the books rather than using this link. Not because of the money (I don't see a bean of it) but because it's more honest. If you don't pirate other people's software, music etc, please consider written work as much the same.

Agree to that and the paper versions are more readable any place any time and cost peanuts as compared to other "technology" books. Also these books are definitive sources for the right,so you will really cherish owning one of these.

Jo is probably too self-effacing to mention it, but she now has a new beginner book out "The Accredited Symbian Developer Primer" which is up-to-date for Symbian OS v9.
