Clock screensaver too dark to read on 2610

I was wondering if anyone could help with my 2610. The clock screensaver is too dark to read. The screen appears black to look at but when you shine a torch on it you can see the digital clock display. Telstra indicated this is normal for this model and I should just live with it but I find it hard to believe from Nokia.

Any suggestions on how to fix this issue or have I just got a dud phone?

The same observation! Developers, do not sleep and provide us with instructions how to see the clock.
I try to switch off power saving and sleep function, but the display always go dark. Why?
