Looking for a good book

hi!

I am looking for a good book that explains the internals of a mobile handset...like, i wud wanna know whether there is an equivalent of a GPU or RAM (found in desktops) in a mobile handset...what kind of processors go into it...types of antennas.

I am not a hardware engineer though but like programming for mobile phones.

the book you suggested seems interesting at first sight but a quick look at the table of contents reveals that only 1 section of the 1st chapter is dedicated to mobile handset hardware...The rest of the book is dedicated to the OS, & rightly so.

I've read both. I think the 3G books concentrating more on the 3G cellular radio and network design side. It doesn't address the "smartphone" side with either a separate application processor for that side, which is more typical.

The latter is also much older (published in 2003 and thus probably written in 2001/2002).

Anyway, your choice. You could also get/read both. (And you can get used copies much cheaper than new, I suppose, so price shouldn't be an issue.)

@petrib: I suppose its a safe assumption that the features on a 'smartphone' are a subset of featues on a 3G handset.

I am told there is a section in the 3G book which talks about demodulation, encryption, video decode, etc. which helps you understand what happens on the digital baseband/application processor side of the phone.

- I need to add to this a brief understanding of the mixed signal side and RF, if possible, as Mixed signal chip is what ultimately hooks to the man machine analog interfaces - headsets, chargers, USB connectors, etc.
- This with a fundamental understanding of how a phone board looks will be an excellent starting point.

Are the above two points covered in any of the two books under consideration?
