    Hi,

I have a question regarding QR Codes on European Nokia handsets , if anyone here can help.

I have tested the Kaywa QR code reader on the Motorola v3x and it works perfectly - the v3x has a macro-mode on its camera. I would prefer to use Nokia, however, you need the camera to be able to focus on close-up objects for the software to work.

I've checked http://europe.nokia.com and I can't find any Nokia handset that has either macro-mode or auto-focus cameras.

The Kaywa reader page shows a list of compatible Nokia terminals here:
    http://reader.kaywa.com/phones

This list includes the following Nokias:

    - 3230
    - 5300
    - 6233
    - 6260
    - 6280
    - 6600
    - 6620
    - 6630
    - 6670
    - 6680
    - 6681
    - 6682
    - 7610
    - N70
    - N90

I don't think these phones will work though. I suspect that Nokia's Japanese handsets do include macro-/auto-focus modes (as almost every phone in Japan has this facility) but that Nokia has hobbled the camera on the European versions. A quick google on 3230 autofocus shows plenty of pages in English which state that the 3230 does not have autofocus or macrolens capabilities.

So, I can go with Motorola, or try to find a suitable Nokia.

Does anyone know if there are any Nokia handsets available in Europe which have auto-focus or macro-mode? (I'd prefer not to have to go N-Series!)

And indeed, has anyone out there got QR codes working on Nokias?

    Thanks!

    N80 has close-up mode
N90, N73 have autofocus, which is also in N95 (this device has been announced, but is not yet on the market)
    N93 has 3xoptical zoom

I have tested with other 2D barcodes and you can get the codes read even if the picture is not exactly in focus.

    Hi Hartti,

Thanks for that. I have a 6230i, so I'll try taking a shot with that. (It's not the right version of java, but I'll bluetooth the photo onto my PC and use a desktop barcode reader).

    I'll post the results here...

    Thanks again

OK, for the record, the photo I took with the 6230i does not scan. It comes out quite blurry and is not recognised as a barcode. I think that macro/auto-focus will be needed.

So it seems Nokia doesn't have many options on this front - nSeries terminals only.

QR recognization software can work on Nokia's phone.
Close-up focus is not a must for this barcode reader ,although it can improve the perfermance.
Actually ,my team have developed one ,at least it works well on N70.
If you want ,email me ,I can send you a video recode of this.

HI, I am currently working on 2D barcodes, DataMatrix not QR-Code. However they have similar requirements.
I am using the N80 as it has an addon Macro lense ( focal length 15-20cm). A problem I have experienced with this mobile is that you cannot obtain better resolution than 800*600 in J2ME getSnapShot method and 1280*960
in Symbian C++. My previuos mobile N70, allowed to take snapshots at 2Mp using both J2Me and C++. ( J2ME is by far slower than C++ on the N80).

I would like to get some more information about barcode reading technology. Do currently available readers do some type of image processing such as co-ordinate transformation, sharpening etc.

Any relevant links and coments are welcome,

    Thanks,
    Darren

Thanks for that! I've tried it out on the 6680 too and that's also working.

I have installed the QuickMark reader on my E50 and it reads every QRCode. I have tried with big ones (more than 150 char) and it ´didin´t read it.
