Introduction

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) refers to the capability of routing voice conversations over IP-based networks, such as the internet. The use of VoIP has expanded rapidly from a PC experience to become a common way of communicating over mobile networks. Mobile VoIP can use any IP bearer, such as home and office WiFi networks or telecoms networks.

Nokia provides a VoIP client for selected Symbian and Series 40 devices, which can be provisioned OTA to work with third party VoIP services using IETF SIP servers. In addition, Symbian offer developers the option to create their own standalone VoIP clients and solutions.

VoIP service providers can use the Nokia SIP VoIP client, which is included in selected Symbian and Series 40 devices, to provide mobile VoIP services without having undertake software development for mobile devices. VoIP service providers configure the Nokia VoIP client to work with their SIP servers by sending the OMA DM settings over SMS or, for Symbian devices, creating an application that configures the client.
