On S60 3rd Edition, the security setting controlling whether self-signed applications can be installed is found in the Application Manager. Usually the Application Manager is located in the Tools folder. Go to the Settings menu under Options. The setting for Software installation has two choices: "All" or "Signed Only". Changing this setting to "All" will allow self-signed applications to be installed.

On S60 5th Edition, things work in exactly the same way, except that the Application manager can be found in the Settings menu. The following screenshots - taken from a Nokia 5800 XpressMusic - show the four steps required.
