The Location capability protects APIs that reveal the location of the device, for example GPS
Why?
These APIs could be used to spy on people. The user can decide whether or not to install self-signed software that uses the location APIs, depending on how private they consider their location.
What?
The positioning server checks this capability on APIs that can reveal location.
Where?
Any application that needs to determine the location of the device, e.g. mapping/navigation software. A new positioning system should check this capability, or be implemented as a plugin to the positioning server.
Note:
- Starting from S60 3rd edition FP2, the Location capability has been in the "user capabilities", meaning it can be self signed. This means that commercial or open signed online signing is not mandatory. Earlier S60 3rd edition phones (pre FP2) don't allow installation of self-signed software with this capability.
- To use external Bluetooth GPS devices directly without the Location AP you don't need this capability. Use LocalServices instead.
