MIME stands for the Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions and is an Internet Standard for extending the format of electronic mail. In most cases, the MIME types are used for categorizing and describing binary contents of a file or an electronic message.

MIME is specified in six RFCs : RFC 2045, RFC 2046, RFC 2047, RFC 4288, RFC 4289 and RFC 2077.
