Flash technology overview

Quick links

Flash technology is supported across all Nokia platforms and is widely integrated with Nokia’s WebKit-based mobile browser. You can access the features of Symbian devices from Nokia, such as location information and calendar data, in the ActionScript programming language by using platform services APIs and through the extendable plug-in architecture of the APIBridge component.

For web or media developers, Flash technology offers the quickest and most effective way of building on your existing skill set to create mobile content.

Design

Design mobile content with Flash technology. Flash is one of the most widely used technologies for web designers. Documents in Nokia’s Flash Lite Documentation section will introduce you to valuable information about UI-design guidelines, example applications, content creation, and many other topics. You can ask questions and engage in discussions on the Nokia Developer Discussion Boards. You’ll find rich Flash Lite code examples and technical articles contributed by the Nokia Developer Community on the Nokia Developer Wiki.

Build

Adobe’s Flash-authoring tool offers great features, for example Adobe Device Central, to assist in mobile development. Adobe Device Central is a testing environment that enables a developer to select a target platform or device and to test content on it. Nokia and Adobe work closely to deliver specifications and regular updates for Adobe Device Central.

You can embed Flash content in Web Runtime (WRT) widgets to take full advantage of Nokia Platform Services. Distributing and publishing Flash applications as WRT widgets is easy and inexpensive. Casual Flash content created for the desktop can be viewed in the WebKit-based mobile browser on Symbian devices. In addition, Series 40 devices support the Nokia Flash Lite (NFL) package format, and current Symbian devices support the SIS package format.

Nokia recommends the use of Adobe Device Central, the Nokia Developer remote device access service, or actual devices for testing Flash Lite applications.

Publish

Distributing software is easy. Nokia provides consumers with Nokia Store for easy application discovery, Flash developers can reach more than 180 countries overnight with a simple process and low-cost publishing through Nokia Store. The publishing setup is very simple: Just register as a Nokia publisher, pay a one euro fee, and you’re ready to go.
