Web TV is any internet service providing video content over the web on a catch-up basis. These services can now be delivered
to the new Symbian^3 devices from Nokia, such as the Nokia N8 device. This is because these devices offer compatibility with
the video formats commonly used for Web TV in desktop browser, including Adobe Flash. In addition, optimised video streaming
and playback features coupled with a unique HDMI interface makes these devices a fantastic platform for offering consumers
TV programs in HD quality.
To enable broadcasters to easily take advantage of this opportunity, Nokia has created the On Demand Web TV template.
Created using WRT technology — which uses the well known web mark-up languages and standards — the On-demand Web TV template
enables Web TV services to be optimised for mobile devices. In addition to providing an excellent user experience on the
smallest screen, the template enables the look and feel of the desktop service to be maintained. And, because it’s a WRT
widget, On-Demand Web TV apps can be accessed with a single click from the home screen of any Symbian^3 device from Nokia.
It’s a straightforward three step process to create a fully branded Web TV widget:
- Create video content in the supported format (if necessary).
- Create the XML feed for the content.
- Customise the template to read the XML feed and update the apps branding and visuals.
The design of the On Demand Nokia Web TV template enables an app to be built within a few working days. Once created, the
app can be made available to consumers worldwide through the Ovi Store.
To help drive adoption and interest in Web TV on mobile devices, the Nokia N8 device will ship with a selection of Web TV
services setup in the device’s home screen. Users will then be able to add additional services by downloading them from Ovi
Store.
