Buddy.com

What service does Buddy provide?
Buddy provides developers with an easy-to-use cloud back end for Windows Phone apps, featuring APIs that deliver common app scenarios as a service. By writing apps against the Buddy web services, developers can add functionality, such as global user accounts, geo-location, push notifications and live tiles, photo albums and image filtering, messaging, friends/groups functionality, metadata storage, and analytics/reporting by calling Buddy's API library. For more information, see http://buddy.com.

What are the benefits of using Buddy's services?
By using Buddy services, your development will become more efficient since you won't have to write server-side code for many cloud-enabled app features. This means you will save development time and money, and you will be able to create more engaging apps for your users.

How do you calculate the "up to $1200/year (USD)" benefit?
As of 1 October 2012, Buddy offers all users 500,000 free API calls per month. For calls over this allotment, Buddy currently charges $0.20/1000 calls. Through our partnership with Buddy, we're able to offer an additional 500,000 API calls per month to NPDP members, which, if used, would ordinarily cost $100 per month.

When does my benefit with Buddy begin?
Your one-year Lumia Premium Developer Program benefit with Buddy begins when you sign up for program membership, not when you redeem your benefit. For example, if you join the program in December 2012, your Buddy benefit will expire in December 2013, even if you don't redeem your Buddy benefit until March 2013.

How should I redeem the Buddy token?
To redeem your token, you will need to go to the specific landing page you will be given after you request the token. On that landing page, you will need to complete your registration by providing your Nokia Developer ID and accepting Buddy's terms and conditions. Then you can start using their service.

Do I have to give credit card or other payment information to Buddy while redeeming my token?
No, you do not. If you go over your API call limits, you will be billed by Buddy, and you will be expected to pay for your overage.

What happens if I go over my 1 million API call per month allotment?
You will be billed by Buddy for the overage. If you do not sign up for a payment plan with Buddy, your usage will be capped at 1 million calls per month for the duration of your NPDP membership.

Will I be notified when I am getting close to my limit?
Yes, as you get close to your limit of 1 million API calls, Buddy will notify you to fill out their billing profile and set up your payment account.

How do I pay for API calls over my allotment in the Buddy payment system?
Buddy accepts major credit cards, such as Mastercard, Visa, American Express, and Discover, or any other payment mechanism Buddy may choose to offer.

What happens when my Lumia Premium Developer Program membership expires?
Once your membership expires, your monthly API allotment will drop to the standard Buddy free allotment. As of 30 October 2012, it is set at 500,000 calls a month.

Who should I reach out to for Buddy related product support questions, Nokia or Buddy?
You should reach out to Buddy. Buddy provides unlimited web support and guarantees a response within 1-3 days .

Tech Support Tickets

I see I get two free tech support tickets with my membership. What can I use them for?
Tech support tickets may be used to report issues or ask questions about:

  • Nokia hardware-specific issues (camera and imaging, video codecs, NFC, PureHD+, Bluetooth, overall SW performance on Nokia Windows Phone devices, and memory issues)
  • HTML5 on Nokia Lumia devices
  • Use of the Nokia on-device services (i.e., App2app APIs)
  • Issues encountered when porting WP7.x apps to WP8

Can I get support for Symbian, Meego, S40, or other Nokia platforms using these tickets?
No. These tickets are specific to Windows Phone and Nokia-specific hardware and technologies related to Windows Phone.

What kind of response time can I expect with my tech support tickets?
This depends greatly on the number of simultaneous requests we receive, but typical response time is one to five business days.

If I use my two tickets, can I buy more?
Yes, you may. The cost for each additional ticket is $99 (USD).

When my membership expires, what happens to my tickets?
The tickets will expire, as well.

If I renew my membership, will I get new tickets?
Yes, you will, but the old ones will still expire. So if you don't use your two tickets during your membership year, even if you renew, those two unused tickets will still expire. .

I already paid for a tech support ticket before the launch of the Lumia Premium Developer Program, but haven’t used it. What happens to that ticket?
Your existing tickets will be good for another six months. But after that, they will expire.

Can I use the ticket I already paid for to ask for support for Symbian, Meego, S40, or other Nokia platforms?
Yes, previously-paid for tickets are not subject to the same limitations as the Lumia Premium Developer Program tickets.

Nokia Developer aims to help you create apps and publish them so you can connect with users around the world.
