Coffee break
15:00 - 16:30 Mobilising social networks
- User Generated Content - Dr. Paul Coulton, Lancaster University
The emergence of large scale user generated content marks a shift among organizations from creating on-line content to creating the facilities for non-media professionals (i.e.'ordinary people') to publish their own content in prominent places. Mobile phones are particularly well suited for this type of media creation as they always carried and are therefore immediately available to the users when required. This talk illustrates through example both the power or users generated content but also the opportunities for harnessing the greater contextual awareness and flexibility the mobile phones offer over current online services. Have a look at Paul's blog entry and his presentation .
- Presence - Dr. Reuben Edwards, Lancaster University
For developers a key issue in developing applications is to identify the target market, and the devices they will be using. In this session we shall discuss what can be learnt by monitoring the presence of users and their devices. Using two case studies from Denmark and the UK we shall consider the device ownership amongst a specific demographic and how such information may be used to develop better applications, and finally how to develop social applications based on (and reacting to) the presence of mobile devices. Have a look at Reuben's presentation from here .
- Socially Aware Solutions - Dr. Nathan Eagle, Massachusetts Institut of Technology
Inference in Complex Social Systems: Insights and Applications from the Behavior of the Aggregate. Nathan Eagle has used mobile phones to continuously gather information including proximity, location, and communication from 100 human subjects at MIT. In this talk Nathan describes how this type of data can be used to uncover the structure in behaviour of both individuals and organizations, infer relationships, and study social network dynamics. It will be demonstrated how these insights into own behaviors can be used to develop applications that better support both the individual, organization and society. More information about these projects is available at: http://reality.media.mit.edu. Check also Nathan's blog entry and his presentation .
