Designing for Series 40 Touch and Type

This section provides touch UI considerations for the Series 40 Touch and Type platform. For detailed implementation guidelines, see Java Developer's Library.

Note: For more related resources, see also

The new features of the Series 40 Touch and Type platform include the following:

  • The navigation key and physical softkeys have been removed, and there is a softkey area at the bottom of the screen.
  • Devices have a resistive screen with a minimum size of 2.4”.
  • The user experience follows single tap interaction: a single tap on any object will select and activate the command.
  • Basic touch strokes and gestures are aligned across Nokia devices: content follows finger movement when dragging or flicking.
  • Most elements on the screen are touchable. The status area and the scroll bar are only informative, not touchable. In full canvas the full screen is touchable.
  • Design is optimised for use with one hand.
  • Inputting numbers and text is easy via keypad.
