Screen resolutions, input methods, and connection speeds

Nokia devices come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and features because they are designed for different markets and uses. When creating Web content for a wide audience, you should make sure that it fits a variety of input and output devices. This topic presents some general guidelines that cover devices that are in the market today as well as devices that have been released in the last few years.

Screen resolutions in Nokia devices

Nokia devices can be divided into two categories: mobile phones and smartphones. In each category, there are two main screen resolutions. The following table presents the screen resolutions of Nokia devices.

Category Resolution Orientation
Mobile phones group 1 128 x 160 Default only
Mobile phones group 2 240 x 320 Default only
Smartphones group 1 240 x 320 Portrait and landscape
Smartphones group 2 360 x 640 Portrait and landscape

Note that different devices have different default orientations. For example, the default mode of the Nokia C3-00 is landscape. Therefore, the correct resolution for this device is 320 x 240. Smartphones can also switch from landscape to portrait mode dynamically.

Input methods in Nokia devices

Nokia devices can have a variety of input methods. Touch—only devices have virtual keyboards, while other devices contain full hardware keyboards and keypads. Hybrid devices have both virtual and hardware methods of input. Unless you are targeting a specific device or market, you should assume that any, but not all, of these input methods are available. For example, S60 3rd edition devices do not have touch input. Instead, they have a mouse pointer and a joystick to control it. Users of these devices click on small buttons and aim with precision. On the other hand, touch-only devices such as the Nokia N8 require more spacing between links.

If you know your target audience, you can apply the following rules of thumb:
  • Most Nokia mobile phones have a hardware keypad and do not accept touch input.

  • S60 3rd Edition devices do not have a touch screen.

  • All S60 5th Edition devices have a touch screen, which could be either capacitive or resistive.

  • Symbian devices with a touch screen might or might not have a hardware keyboard

  • Symbian devices that do not have a touch screen could have either a full hardware keyboard or a hardware keypad.

Connection speeds

Although the device does not tell you how it is connecting to your site or Web app, you can assume that most mobile phones (Series 40 and lower-end phones) access the Internet through a mobile operator. Some mobile phones have WIFI capabilities, but many do not.

Many smartphones support WIFI, so you cannot make an assumption about how they are accessing your site. If you want to offer large media, such as high resolution images, on your site, you should offer an option to your users to enable them to switch between the mobile operator network and the WIFI network.
