What’s new in Nokia PC Connectivity API 3.2?

Updated APIs
Updates have been made to the Device Management API, File System API, and Content Access API.

Support for the latest version of Visual Studio
Development of connectivity applications can now be undertaken in Visual Studio 2008.

Key features of the Nokia PC Connectivity API

Connection management
The Device Management API enables developers to easily build solutions for connectivity between a PC application and a Nokia mobile device using any available connectivity bearer, such as Bluetooth technology, an infrared (IR) connection, or Universal Serial Bus (USB). In addition, Bluetooth pairing is supported.

Device notification and selection
Developers can use the Device Management API to enable PC applications to recognise device connection and disconnection events, and to select devices and appropriate connectivity bearers.

Device information
The Device Management and File System APIs provide developers with the ability to query device information and available memory status from within their applications.

Directory and file management
The File System API enables PC applications to perform basic folder and file-management operations on a connected device’s data, such as browse, create, copy, rename, delete, and move.

Messaging
Developers can use the Content Access API to build PC applications that create, modify, and delete SMS and MMS messages. The API can be used to send and receive SMS and MMS messages.

PIM management
Developers can use the Content Access API to build PC applications that create, delete, and modify phone book, calendar, note, and bookmark items. The API can be used to transfer items between a PC application and a device.

Device management
Developers can use the Device Management API to create PC applications that acquire information and receive notifications about changes in media status and inquire about a mobile device’s supported services and capabilities.

What sample applications are included in the Nokia PC Connectivity API?

Four sample applications are provided for each of the supported languages — Microsoft Visual C++, Microsoft Visual C# .NET, and Microsoft Visual Basic .NET:

  • ApplicationInstaller — illustrates how to use the APIs to install applications on a device.
  • FileBrowser — demonstrates how to browse a device’s memory.
  • PhoneNavigator — shows how to receive device management notifications; search for, pair, and unpair a Bluetooth device; and fetch device-specific information.
  • PIMNavigator — demonstrates how to use the APIs to access a device’s contact and calendar information from a PC.
