Devanagari script is used for inputting Hindi language. The support for this writing system is introduced in S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 1.
The following are characteristics for the Devanagari writing system:
Text and digits flow from left to right.
Both European and Devanagari digits are used. The Devanagari digits are offered as an option in General Settings, very much the same way as Arabic-Indic and Eastern Arabic-Indic digits.
No capitalization is used.
Devanagari is a phonetic and syllabic script. Phonetic means that words are written exactly as they are pronounced; syllabic means that text is written using consonants and vowels that together form syllables. Vowels can be either independent or dependent.
Devanagari uses modifiers, which indicate nasalization or aspiration of a vowel or a consonant.
Ligatures are used. This has impact on the cursor movement, deletion, and insertion points in text.
Devanagari script has some punctuation marks of its own.
There is only a limited amount of characters.
